Why the Instagram Mute Feature Matters

Taking a cue from Twitter who released a similar feature a few years ago, Instagram announced on Tuesday that its users will be able to “mute” posts from certain accounts without unfollowing them.

Muting people on Instagram will be a much welcome feature and one that users have been asking for a while.

This may not seem like a huge deal but it is.

We all know those Instagram offenders who post more than three pictures in a row without using the carousel feature. Annoying, I know (sarcasm intended).

This will allow Instagram users to ignore posts from acquaintances without having to do something “drastic” such as unfollowing them and possibly destroying their relationship in the process. Yes, this is the world we live in today.

“The new feature lets you hide posts in the feed from certain accounts, without unfollowing them. With this change, you can make your feed even more personalized to what matters to you,” Instagram said in a statement.

The Twitter mute feature has been a favorite of my for quite some time. I have been known to mute people who go on tweetstorms, people who often post pictures of their meals, etc.

Sorry, I’m not sorry.

This feature will roll out to its users over the “coming weeks” but once you have it, here’s how you can start muting people immediately.

To mute an account, tap the … menu in the corner of the post. From there, you can choose whether to mute posts, or mute posts and stories from an account. You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray, or from a profile.
