The Thing About Habits

Habits are formed through repetition. You do something often and it becomes habitual, good or bad. We often take on bad habits more than the good.

Why? Because it makes us feel better. Smoking, eating fast food, not exercising, etc. Our bad habits can be broken but most of the time, we don’t do it because it’s hard to break habits than to make them.

They eventually become part of our daily routine and we can’t seem to function if we don’t go through that routine. For me, it’s coffee in the morning. I can definitely go without it in the morning but I prefer not to.

I have a specific routine I follow that has been seeing me well for a while now. I wake up around 7 AM, do some light reading whether it’s a book or articles I’ve saved via Instapaper. After that comes my morning coffee. I’ve become sort of a coffee snob lately. After drinking sugary Starbucks drinks for years, my body just can’t stand it anymore so I enjoy a good cup of french pressed coffee or I go to any local mom and pop coffee shop in Pasadena.

After I get some caffeine in my bloodstream, I start writing. II prefer writing in the morning before I start doing anything else because I don’t want an excuse to not do any writing. have a goal of 500 words a day, good or bad because I want to keep my habit of writing going. I have a list of topics I want to write about but sometimes, I just write about whatever is on my mind. Some days, the stuff I write isn’t good but it doesn’t matter. It’s just about doing it.

I prefer writing on paper first because I tend to get distracted if I am on my Macbook. I usually get the idea going and then switch over to the Macbook when my hands get tired from writing. This way, it’s just my notebook and pen and it feels way better to see the words written out by hand.
